With shorter days and falling temperatures, your body is going to need some adjusting to tackle the cool winter months ahead. Here are a few tips to help you deal with the changing seasons!

  • Fight Against Weight Gain - Holidays, high-carb comfort foods and hibernation can lead to weight gain, but they don't have to! Make your best effort to drink lots of water, eat within an hour of waking, control your portions and stay physically active. What you eat is as important as how you eat, so be sure to include plenty of whole grains and a rainbow of vegetables
  • Fight Against Grumpiness - Shorter days mean less sunlight, the doorway to SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder, a condition as bad as it sounds. Feeling grumpy, depressed, sluggish, sleepy, hungry, or distracted? It could be SAD, which can worsen as the winter deepens and daily sunlight shrinks to less than nine hours. To beat these blues, you need sunlight or its electric equivalent (specialized light boxes) on your face as the strongest receptors are in your eyes. Other ways to beat the blues include exercise, socializing and consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin D.
  • Fight Against Tougher Skin - Cold air and low humidity can dry and thicken your skin, which can lead to chapped or cracked skin and lips. You should wear protective clothing and use moisturizer to avoid chapped hands and face. Consider cooler baths and showers and applying baby or mineral oil on skin afterward.
  • Fight Against Colds & the Flu - Winter months are prime time for colds and the flu, but there are ways you can fight back! Consult with your healthcare provider to see if a flu shot is appropriate for you. Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly, make sure you're eating a good, balanced diet, get plenty of fresh air and lots of sleep. These will all help build your resistance and keep you healthy!
